Lydia Ko
had already amazed the golfing world by
winning three professional tournaments on three different tours at the age of
just 15.
But in the first round of the women’s Australian
Open on Thursday what she pulled off was was incredible even by her own standards.
Drawn
with world No 1 Yani Tseng and high-profile American Michelle Wie for the
season-opening event on the LPGA Tour, the inference was clear: let’s see how
she copes when all eyes are trained on her being part of the marquee group on
the biggest tour in the women’s game.
I feel I am getting old,’ said Tseng, 24, who two years ago became the youngest player in the history of the game to win five majors. ‘Lydia just looks like a child, she still looks like 15, but the way she’s playing golf, she looks like a pro.’
The diminutive Ko is playing in this event after coming off her third pro victory last week, achieved in her native land. That’s supposed to be the hardest thing of all, coming down after a win, but she made light of it with an amazing display, highlighted by a wedge from 100 yards that dropped into the hole for an eagle three at the par five 15th at Royal Canberra.
