Ladies European Tour (LET) - Golf stars visit Sanya Orphanage

Golfers from the Ladies European Tour, Ladies Asian Golf Tour and China LPGA Tour took time out from their preparations for the Sanya Ladies Open in Hainan, China, on Tuesday by visiting a local Welfare House for children aged 2-10.
The players delivered gifts of books, toys, household goods, clothes and food to the orphanage, which cares largely for children with disabilities.
Many of the players said that they hoped their visit would bring awareness of the orphans to the local community and increase support.
The defending Sanya Ladies Open champion Frances Bondad and recent winner of the Spanish and French Opens, Stacey Keating of Australia, were joined by fellow LET players Felicity Johnson, Holly Aitchison, Stacy Lee Bregman and Nikki Garrett.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF COURSE

Las Ramblas Golf Course

Las Ramblas golf course was the second property owned by QUARA Group and opened in 1990.
This course was created by the famous designer Pepe Gancedo, always providing his designs with creative and innovative characteristics with quality that has earned his national and international reputation.
Las Ramblas golf course has incomparable beauty and as its name indicates, has been developed on a steep terrain surrounded by watercourses. The vigorous vegetation surrounding the course is formed primarily of leafy Mediterranean pines that create an unforgettable backdrop for the course. Furthermore, Las Ramblas golf course offers magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea from many locations.
Thanks to the course´s leafy vegetation, there are abundant shady areas making it a pleasant place for playing golf even in the warmest months of the year.

Las Ramblas golf course is located along the access road to the town of San Miguel de Salinas.
It has a residential complex within a natural setting where integration with nature is well addressed. It is all about merging every element with the pre-existing natural environment. This way, both the golf course and the residential complex are combined to form one with nature.
This golf course has very good access, both by road as well as by air with two important airports nearby: Alicante's El Altet and San Javier in Murcia.
The course has hosted important Competitions:
At the Professional Level:
  • APG (Association of Golf Professionals from the Valencia Community) Championship celebrated in 2003 and 2005 International Try outs for the EPD Tour in 2003
  • International Try outs for the EPD Tour in 2003

GOLF IN SOUTHERN SPAIN

Southern Spain is a popular holiday destination for a variety of reasons, the area of Alicante and Murcia is blessed with a mild winter climate and fantastic mediterranean summers! Beautiful beaches and the weather has attracted toursits from all over europe since the beginning of the first package holiday to the area in the 60s!

Home to 38 golf courses Alicante and Murcia is now one of the most popular golf destinations in Southern Spain. Such a variety of courses to choose from to suit all levels of golfers. Lets begin by looking at one of the popular golf courses in our area and maybe one of the longest established in the Alicante area.

VILLAMARTIN
This golf course was designed by Mr. Puttman and opened in 1972. It is, therefore, one of the most established courses in the Community of Valencia.
Its extraordinary design and unmatched setting undoubtedly make this course one of the best golf courses in Spain. Its well-rooted and mature vegetation of over 40 years provides a beautiful backdrop.
Villamartín Golf provides a course for players of all skill and levels to enjoy since it requires the use of every club in the bag. The greens at Villamartín are wonderfully designed and have attracted very important Tournaments.
It is built on hilly ground with the front nine holes being at the highest point of the course offering some spectacular sea views. The second nine are situated more in valleys with brancas ( ravines ) coming into play on several holes.

At the Professional level:
•    Mediterranean Open Volvo PGA European Tour, held in 1997, that Jose Maria Olazabal won
•    European Challenge PGA Tour, on two occasions
•    And various European Professional Associations have selected Villamartín Golf to play their tournaments.

At the Amateur level:
•    Several times in the past few years the National and Valencia Federations have included Villamartín Golf as a site for important competitions for men and women.
•    In addition, every year, Sponsoring Companies have selected Villamartín to host important amateur competitions such as:
o    Audi Golf Tour
o    El Corte Inglés Golf Tour
o    Grupo Soledad Golf Tour
o    Mercedes Trophy

Ladies European Tour (LET) - Carlota’s first impressions of China

Carlota Ciganda holds a huge lead on the LET’s Rolex Rookie of the Year standings and a slim margin over Caroline Masson at the top of the ISPS Handa Order of Merit.
The 22-year-old Spaniard from Pamplona could become the second youngest ever winner of the ranking if she can keep her lead after the final four events of the season.
Laura Davies claimed both the order of merit and rookie title in 1985, aged 22 years and two months, while Carlota is just a few months older.
During her first trip to the Suzhou Taihu Open and Sanya Ladies Open, Carlota spoke about her experiences and impressions of China.
Carlota, what have been your first impressions of China?

Forties can be tough to fathom for pro golfers

Vijay Singh

For his 40th birthday Padraig Harrington received a vintage Coca-Cola machine, and he can talk your ears off about its charms.
The machine takes quarters – as any good vintage item should - and apparently dispenses the iciest-cold bottles you’ve ever tasted.
But ask Harrington about the significance of his 40th birthday and one of the most talkative players on the PGA Tour grows quiet.
“Nothing,” Harrington, now 41, said of the birthday milestone during the Byron Nelson Championship. “Nothing at all.”
But? But?
“Nothing,” he said, eyes narrowing.
Harrington is hardly the only golfer to look askance at a philosophical discussion of the aging golfer. The topic lives on the fairways and greens of the professional game but also in sports as a whole. (Who doesn’t recall the story of Willie Mays falling down in the outfield as an ancient member of the New York Mets?)
So what are we to make of the golfer past 40?
Does “40 as the new 30” apply to the professional golfer? Who can know for sure?
On Bermuda on Wednesday, Harrington held off a younger trio of Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley to win the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for the first time.
But three days earlier, forty-somethings Davis Love III (tee shot into the water), David Toms (tee shot into a bunker) and Jim Furyk (tee shot left of the green) each failed to chase down Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey down the stretch at The McGladrey Classic.
Were those nervous golf swings by fading champions or was that just golf?
People have forever pointed to Jack Nicklaus’ win at the 1986 Masters at age 46 as proof that older players can still do magic. Sam Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open at age 52, the oldest winner in PGA Tour history. Tom Watson’s near victory at 59 at the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry provided further evidence that winning tournaments with salt and pepper is not farfetched.
But are Nicklaus, Snead and Watson exceptions or the rule? And, besides, aren’t they three of the greatest players of all time?
Tiger Woods often points to Nicklaus (and now Watson) as evidence that he has plenty of time to surpass Nicklaus’ mark of 18 major championships, but history says he’d better hurry.
Only 36 of the last 423 major championships (dating back to 1860) have been won by forty-somethings, the last two being Darren Clarke at the 2011 Open Championship and Ernie Els at the 2012 Open Championship.
Woods’s golfing gifts are all-time, but that does not mean winning majors in his 40s will be a slam dunk.
At the 2010 Transitions Championship I posed the question to Jim Furyk about soon turning 40, neither of us knowing he would win that tournament and two more besides, claiming the FedEx Cup title and Player of the Year award at the season’s end.
“I feel a lot of it has to do with the fire and the want and desire to want to play,” Furyk said then. “You get a lot of guys when they get in their mid 40s, family becomes more important. They’ve got other business and other things going on and golf takes a back seat and it makes it a lot harder to compete. I definitely am not planning on retiring any time in the next few years. When I decide it’s time I’d like to be able to do it because I want to do it, not because I have to.”
Two years after winning Player of the Year, Furyk found himself in contention all season long, losing in a playoff at the Transitions, hitting a hook into the trees at The Olympic Club, and handing the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to Keegan Bradley after making a mess of the 18th hole.
Furyk hit some wonderful shots at the Ryder Cup, but his missed putts will be all that’s remembered.
Surely, the desire was there but maybe the nerves were, too.
At 48, Kenny Perry said a poor chip on the 17th hole on Sunday of the 2009 Masters might have cost him a green jacket.
“I can’t stop my right hand when I get a little nervous,” he said then. “It wants to shoot a little bit and I can’t calm it down.”
Vijay Singh has won 22 times after turning 40 (including a major, the 2004 PGA Championship) but how many forty-somethings can match him for talent and work ethic?
These are the questions that dominate golf and sports. We don’t know when the winning will stop, only that it does for everyone. It is why Harrington’s smile was so wide in Bermuda and why Furyk’s face was pained in Sea Island.
In a game of many mysteries, the 40s provide no certainties.

Tiger Woods to Build Course in Cabo San Lucas

Design has announced plans for “El Cardonal,” an 18-hole championship golf course in Cabo San Lucas designed by Woods on which construction began last month.
Part of the Diamante Cabo San Lucas community, the 7,300-yard course is expected to be completed in 18 months.
“I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices,” Woods said. “Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.”
