So when the World Number one has a dip in form and a few problems with his game who does he ask for advice?
Well Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell have both had a hand in helping Rory McIlroy rediscover his mojo!
No-one was better than Woods, of course, at turning a blind eye to the hundreds of teaching experts telling him he was doing it wrong when making swing changes and keeping the faith.
‘Am I going to share it? No, but we have talked,’ he said.
His verdict, after posting a 66 that tied for the lead while McIlroy languishes back in joint 50th place following a 73? ‘Well, he certainly struggled today,’ said Woods. ‘He’s not drawing the ball like he used to and like he wants. He’s a little defensive out there and that happens. We have all gone through stretches like this.’
Playing with fear, the pros call it, is when a golfer as normally aggressive as McIlroy becomes confused and unsure of whether the ball is going left or right. He completely understands McIlroy and has been quick to offer advice.
Woods might not have wanted to elaborate on the advice he gave McIlroy but he was more forthcoming about the tips he received from Steve Stricker that have saw him bounce back and go on to win in Miami after a poor showing at the Honda Classic last week.
He asked his long term friend and Ryder cup playing partner to take a look at his putting action.
"Whatever he says I am going to do because he is one of the best putters who ever lived and knows my stroke so well," explained Woods.
‘He just gave me a couple of things to think about and, lo and behold, the ball started rolling.’
