Rory
McIlroy has parted company with an important member of his back-up team as he
tries to kick start his season at this week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Steve
McGregor was the man who devised McIlroy’s fitness programme and oversaw his
development from a teenager with puppy fat to the well-toned athlete he is
today.
McGregor
has carved out a name for himself and is now much in demand. McIlroy had to plead with him last year to
persuade him to stay part of his team.
‘We
didn’t quite beg, but Rory did feel Steve was a vital part of the team,’ said
McIlroy’s manager Conor Ridge last May. ‘He’s really happy Steve could keep
working with him.’ McGregor has decided to concentrate on his work with the New York Knicks basketball team and will also continue his work with Lee Westwood.
‘Rory
asked if he could ring me up from time to time and I told him I’d always be
more than happy to take the call,’ said McGregor. He was also instrumental in helping Manchester City with their fitness programme during their successful Premier League season last year, he is known for his cutting edge ideas that help everything to help a golfers swing, core stability and balance.
