John
Merrick won his first PGA Tour title at
the Northern Trust Open after beating fellow American Charlie Beljan in a
play-off.
Merrick
from California came out on top at the
second extra hole at the Riviera Country Club a par being enough to see off his
compatriot after the pair had finished tied on 11 under.
Both
started with fours to start with at the
18th hole before Beljan - who had birdied the last in regulation to
sign for a 67 - couldn't quite match his opponent at the 10th, meaning he
missed out on the chance to add to his success at the Children's Miracle
Network Hospitals Classic that saved his Tour card late last year.
