Michael Thompson and Luke Guthrie are tied at the top of
the leader board after Thompson birdied the last in the third round of the
Honda Classic.
The two Americans sit together on eight under at the top, two clear of Lee
Westwood and Geoff Ogilvy. Rickie Fowler and fellow American Charles Howell III
are a further shot back heading into Sunday at Palm Beach Gardens.Thompson (70) could well have been clear on his own had he put a little more power on his eagle putt at the 18th. Guthrie, meanwhile, signed for a 71 after ending his round with seven successive pars.
Westwood remained in contention despite suffering a disappointing front nine at his 'home' event, including back-to-back bogeys before the turn.
Despite the windy conditions he picked up birdies at the 14th and 17th. Although he found water with his approach to the last, he still managed a par to settle for a score of 70.
"It was tricky," Westwood - who now lives in Florida and is staying at home during the tournament - said afterwards. "We didn't have wind the first couple of days so it came as a bit of a surprise.
"I had to acclimatise quickly and I did. I played quite nicely."
